Ambassador's speech in Pärnu-Qingdao business forum

Dear Mr. Mayor Romek Kosenkranius,

Dear Mr. Vice-Chairman of the standing committee of People’s Congress of Qing Dao Zou Chuanning,

Ladies and Gentlemen, friends,

Good morning.

It is my great pleasure to visit the beautiful city Pärnu and participate in the event of "Pärnu - Qingdao Chinese week" together with Mayor Romek Kosenkranius. And welcome my home country fellows from Qingdao to come to the famous Estonian resort city Pärnu and enjoy the western scenery of Estonia. It is said that Pärnu is the birth place of Estonia. It makes me feel respectful to the city. There are many similarities between Pärnu and QD. Both are coastal cities and well known summer vacation spots and both cities have been successful in tourism industry. I believe this event will build a high-quality city cooperation platform for entrepreneurs of the two cities, and will become a good example of city exchange and communication between our two countries.

Estonia is an important partner of China in the Baltic and Nordic region. China and Estonia are traditional friendly countries with no historical entanglements and fundamental conflicts of interest. In recent years, China-Estonia relations have maintained a sound momentum of development, with increasing exchanges in the field of politics, culture, education, economy and trade.

In terms of high-level exchange, last year, President Kaljulaid visited China and met with Chinese President Xi jinping, starting a new phase of rapid development of bilateral relations. Prime Minister Ratas has attended the 16+1 Summit three times in succession, putting a high value on developing the Chinese market. After joining the Belt and Road initiative in 2017, Estonia has received many high-level officials from China's Ministry of Commerce, China Customs, etc. The delegation of China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and Civil Aviation Administration are coming to visit Estonia in the following weeks. As the closest European country to China and the Belt and Road country, Estonia begins to show its charm to China.

In terms of cultural exchange, Last year, as the guest of honor, the Shanghai Opera House attended the Saarema Opera Festival and presented three wonderful performances which were well received by Estonian people. People in our two countries all love music and the musical and cultural exchanges have brought the hearts of our two peoples closer.

In terms of educational exchange, in order to serve the pragmatic cooperation under the “Belt and Road” initiative, Beijing international studies university has been offering Estonian language courses since 2017 and has signed an education cooperation agreement with the University of Tartu. Now the Chinese students are studying at Tartu University and Tallinn University of technology. In the near future, they will be the first Chinese-Estonian language professionals to help you and your business in China.

In terms of economic and trade exchange, economic and trade relations are the booster and bedrock for the development of bilateral relations. Developing China-Estonia economic and trade relations has always been the focus of our embassy's work. The current high-level exchanges and cultural and educational exchanges between our two countries have also laid a solid foundation for bilateral economic and trade exchanges. The bilateral economic and trade cooperation will be introduced by Economic and Commercial Counsellor Lei jianzhong. I am not going to talk the details, or you may miss the lunch. What I want to express is that Chinese people always value harmony as the most precious thing in doing business. China follows the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and Shared benefits in its cooperation with other partners. Facing the trend of anti-globalization, protectionism and unilateralism, China firmly upholds the multilateral trading system and deepens cooperation with other countries within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations, WTO, G20 and APEC. China continues to contribute positive energy to the global development. We believe that harmony leads to coexistence and cooperation achieve win-win situation. We will promote to build a community of Shared future for mankind by working together with Belt and Road Countries, upholding multilateralism, international rules and free trade.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of PRC. In the past 70 years, especially since the reform and opening up 40 years ago, China's economy has grown 35-fold and 740 million people have been lifted out of poverty. China has become the world's second largest economy and the largest trader of goods and contributed more than 30 percent of global economic growth. China has made magnificent contributions to world development and human progress. China has a huge market, abundant human resources, complete system of industries and fast growing new drivers. China’s economy has enough resilience, potential and room for maneuver. The positive long-term development trend of china’s economy will not change. China also continues to deepen reform, improve the business environment, implement the strategy of innovation-driven development and foster new growth drivers. By promoting sound interaction between economic development and improvement of people's well-being and continuously tapping the potential of domestic demand, China will create more business opportunities for entrepreneurs around the world.

In September, in order to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, our Embassy will organize a series of cultural and economic activities in Tallinn. Among them, a business forum will be held on 12 September. If you are interested in China’s market, you are more than welcome to join us. To hold cultural and economic exchange activities is to make Estonian people no longer need to see China through a telescope or a magnifier. We hope to walk close to you and open a window for you. Then you, with an open mind, can see a real China with your own eyes. I hope and also believe that through activities like Pärnu-Qingdao Chinese week, Estonian friends will begin to know China, fall in love with Qingdao, and make Qingdao as their next travel destination. In QD, you can enjoy different scenery of the stone mountains, beaches and the sea. Of course, don’t forget to drink the famous Tsingtao Beer in the pleasant sea breeze. We look forward to more close exchanges and cooperation between Qingdao and Pärnu, and we believe this two cites will play a positive role in jointly building the "Belt and Road" Initiative for common development between our two countries.

At last but not the least, I wish the Pärnu-Qingdao Chinese week a complete success!
