Speech By Mr. Chen Shanmin, Charge d'Affairs a.i. of Chinese Embassy

2005/09/02
(September 2, 2005)

Respected H.E. President and Mrs. Arnold Rüütel,

Respected Mrs. Tiiu Valm, Director General of Estonian National Library,

Ladies and Gentlemen:

First of all, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Estonia, I would like to extend my warm congratulations on the opening of this new Exhibition Hall of Estonian National Library, specially oriented towards foreign culture exchanges, which we believe will definitely further promote the culture exchanges between Estonia and the countries all over the world. I am glad to see that the Chinese Government provides some equipment in assisting the opening of this new Exhibition hall. Today, the Chinese Script Exhibition, as the first foreign culture exchange program, starts to exhibit in this new hall. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to Estonian National Library for their efforts in preparing this exhibition. It is our great honor to have the presence of His Excellency President Rüütel here regardless of tiredness of his long journey as he has just concluded his successful state visit to China.

The recorded history of Chinese Nation dated back more than 5000 years ago. Chinese Script is a key element of the great Chinese Civilization and Chinese is one of the official working languages in the United Nations. The birth and development of Chinese Script has enabled the recording and passing down of Chinese Civilization up to the present times and made the Chinese Civilization spread world wide, thus making great contributions to the human Civilization. In the information age of today, the Chinese people, with their wisdom, has invented the input technology of Chinese Script into the computer and realized the perfect combination of the ancient script and modern technology. It is my hope that the Chinese Script exhibition and the Tibet Today photo exhibition concurrently exhibited here which introduce the development of Tibet in last 40 years will further increase your knowledge of China and Chinese culture.

Today is 2rd of September, a date which is memorable to the Chinese people and people all over the world. On the same day 60 years ago, the official ceremony of Japanese surrender was held on board of US cruiser Missouri at Tokyo Bay, which marks the victory of 8-year-long Chinese Resistance War Against Japanese Aggression and the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War. Chinese Resistance War Against Japanese Aggression is an important part of the World Anti-Fascist War. The Chinese people have made huge national sacrifice and valuable historical contributions to the victory of the world Anti-Fascist War. Chinese military and civilians casualties amounted to more than 35 million people. Direct economic losses reached 100 billion US dollars. The victory of Chinese Resistance War Against Japanese Aggression is the turning point of Chinese history, from where the Chinese Nation stops its decline and embarks on the path to rejuvenation. The Chinese people who suffered greatly in the war treasures peace in particular and China is an important force in safeguarding world peace in the world today. Since the pursuance of policy of reform and opening up at the end of 70's of the last century, China has chosen a development road of developing herself by striving for international peaceful environment and safeguarding world peace by self-development. Our goal is to build a strong, democratic, civilized and modern socialist China and China is to be a responsible and constructive member of the world community. I believe that it is meaningful and significant to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the victory of Chinese Resistance War Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War on this occasion.

Thank you all!
