Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei Expressing Solemn Position on US President Obama's Scheduled Meeting with the Dalai Lama

2011/07/16

Q: According to the website of the US White House, President Obama is scheduled to meet the Dalai Lama on July 16. How do you comment?

A: Tibet-related issues have a bearing on China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. We are firmly opposed to any foreign political figure meeting the Dalai Lama in whatever form. The Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Embassy in the US have immediately made solemn representations to the US side in Beijing and Washington, D.C. respectively. China urges the US to adhere to its serious pledge of recognizing Tibet as part of China and opposing "Tibet independence", cancel the meeting between President Obama and the Dalai Lama right away and refrain from interfering in China's internal affairs and impairing China-US relations.
